Your next step should be clear before you open another study book. Know the test. Check your program’s requirements. Then spend your time on the concepts you cannot yet explain.

01 / Know the test

The anatomy of the TEAS 7: know what you’re up against.

The ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills is used in nursing and allied health admissions. Preparation needs to cover both the material and the time you have to apply it. Your 209 testing minutes are split across four sections. [1] [2]

ATI TEAS 7 format · standard time limits
SubjectTotal questionsScored / pretestTime limitYour pacing focus
Reading4539 / 655 minFind the evidence without rereading every passage.
Math3834 / 457 minSet up the calculation, track units, then check the result.
Science5044 / 660 minApply concepts across four science areas.
English & Language Usage3733 / 437 minKeep moving: the average allowance is one minute per question.
Total170150 / 20209 minPlus a separate 10-minute break after Math.

Question counts and limits: ATI. “Your pacing focus” is AceItPrep study advice. Approved accommodations can change your time allowance. [1] [2]

Practice the section clock, not just the total.

Unused time does not transfer to the next section. You can revisit answers within the current section while time remains; after submitting it, you cannot return. A 10-minute break follows Math and sits outside the testing time. [2]

Also prepare for multiple select, fill-in-the-blank, ordered response, and hot-spot questions, alongside conventional multiple choice. ATI awards no partial credit for an item. Learn the instructions as well as the content. [7]

02 / Set the right target

What score do you actually need?

There is no universal TEAS passing score. Your nursing program decides its cutoff and how the result fits alongside the rest of your application. A preparedness label is not a nationwide admissions rule. [5]

ATI’s Version 7 score explanation lists these academic preparedness levels. Use them to understand your report, then compare it with your school’s published requirements. [4]

ATI TEAS 7 academic preparedness levels
LevelATI score range
Developmental0.0–40.0%
Basic40.7–58.0%
Proficient58.7–79.3%
Advanced80.0–91.3%
Exemplary92.0–100.0%

Ranges are reproduced as ATI reports them; do not fill in the gaps by rounding a practice percentage. ATI equates official scores across exam forms. Your practice accuracy is a different measure. [4]

Ask your program these questions before booking.

  • What overall score and any subject minimums do I need?
  • Is there a recent admitted-student average or a points-based selection rubric?
  • Which testing locations and delivery formats do you accept?
  • When must results arrive, how old can they be, and what are the retake rules?

Start with the program’s current admissions page, then ask its admissions office to clarify anything missing. If it shares an accepted-student average, treat that as context - not an acceptance promise. [6]

03 / Make the work count

How to study for the TEAS: read, retrieve, apply.

A book can explain a concept. Recognizing a familiar paragraph, though, does not tell you whether you can answer a new question about it. Use reading to close a specific gap, then check what you can do without your notes.

  1. Find your blind spots first.

Take a mixed baseline set across all four subjects. Sort errors into knowledge gaps, misread instructions, calculation mistakes, and time pressure. “Science needs work” is less useful than “I confuse the roles of these two hormones.”

  2. Unpack the why.

Before reading an explanation, write a sentence about why you chose your answer. Then compare your reasoning with the rationale. Explain why each alternative fails and answer a fresh question on the same concept.

  3. Come back after a gap.

Turn a missed concept into a question you can answer from memory. Revisit it in later sessions. In AceItPrep, rate your flashcard recall to schedule another review; Next Best Action gives you a place to resume, review due cards, or revisit missed questions.

  4. Build up to the clock.

Learn unfamiliar material without a timer first. Add timed sets, then rehearse a longer session. Review the questions you guessed correctly as well as the ones you missed - both can expose a gap.

Make the next session easier to start.

Keep your questions, explanations and review tools in one TEAS workspace.

04 / Give Science a plan

Conquering the TEAS Science section.

Science has 50 total questions in 60 minutes. Its 44 scored items cover four areas, with Anatomy & Physiology contributing the largest share. Give each area deliberate attention rather than treating Science as one long list of facts. [1]

18scored items

Anatomy & Physiology

Explain how body systems work together. Sketch a pathway, name its structures, and explain what each part does.

9scored items

Biology

Connect cell structures to their functions. Practice explaining inheritance and the relationship between genetic information and proteins.

8scored items

Chemistry

Work through atoms, reactions, solutions, and acids and bases. Explain the reasoning behind a calculation or change.

9scored items

Scientific Reasoning

Identify variables and controls. Read a graph, decide what the evidence supports, and distinguish a conclusion from an assumption.

Subtopic counts: ATI’s official blueprint. Review suggestions: AceItPrep. [1]

A useful A&P session has an output.

Choose one body system. Draw it from memory, explain its function in plain language, then answer questions that require you to apply that explanation. Use what you miss to decide what to read next.

Keep a short error log: the concept, what you confused it with, and the explanation you want to remember. On the next review, cover the explanation and try to reconstruct it before checking.

05 / Put it on your calendar

A four-week TEAS study plan you can adapt.

This is a starting structure, not a required preparation period. Give yourself more time if your baseline exposes large gaps. Build around the hours you can actually protect.

Week 01

Measure, then prioritize.

Check your school’s requirements. Take a baseline, choose your two biggest gaps, and set realistic study blocks. Keep a small amount of practice in the other subjects.

Week 02

Repair the gaps.

Use targeted questions, short explanations and recall practice. Start sessions by reviewing earlier errors, then work through a fresh set.

Week 03

Mix the subjects. Add time pressure.

Move from isolated topics to mixed sets. Track whether errors come from the material or your pacing, and adjust the next session accordingly.

Week 04

Rehearse and refine.

Schedule a full-length practice attempt when you have an uninterrupted block. Review it carefully, revisit remaining gaps, and confirm your test-day arrangements.

06 / The practical details

Your TEAS preparation questions, answered.

Is TEAS 7 the version to prepare for in 2026–2027?

ATI’s official exam-details page identifies Version 7 as the current exam when checked on October 17, 2026. This guide covers that published format for students planning in 2026–2027. Recheck ATI and your nursing program before a 2027 test date; this is not a promise that future requirements cannot change.

How many questions are on the TEAS 7, and how long is it?

There are 170 questions in 209 minutes of testing time: Reading 45 questions in 55 minutes, Math 38 in 57 minutes, Science 50 in 60 minutes, and English and Language Usage 37 in 37 minutes. Of the 170 questions, 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items. A separate 10-minute break follows Math.

What TEAS score do I need for nursing school?

Each nursing program sets its own minimum and admissions process. Confirm the overall score, any section minimums, accepted testing format, deadlines and retake rules with your school. An ATI preparedness level does not itself guarantee admission.

Is a free TEAS practice score the same as my official ATI score?

No. The free AceItPrep test reports accuracy on a 20-question sample, with five questions per subject. ATI equates its official scores across exam forms. A short sample, a practice-exam percentage and the AceReady practice-readiness estimate are not interchangeable with an official TEAS score.

How should I study for the TEAS Science section?

Use the four blueprint areas: Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, and Scientific Reasoning. Start with a mixed practice set, identify specific errors, review the relevant concepts, then answer fresh questions and revisit missed concepts later. The guide includes a four-area Science review checklist.
