The No-Fluff HESI A2 Study Guide (2026–2027 Edition)

Find your school’s exact module list and score rules. Then build a preparation plan that gives each required subject the attention it needs.

A strong composite is useful, but it may not satisfy a school that also sets a minimum in every required subject. Before taking a baseline test or buying a review plan, write down your program’s current modules, cutoffs, time allowance, and retake policy.

01 / Start with your program

The HESI A2 is modular. Your school selects the subjects.

HESI Admission Assessment is developed by Elsevier. Its current sixth-edition review covers Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology. Your program decides which components are required, so there is no universal module package or total exam duration for every nursing applicant.

Common HESI A2 module structure and recommended timing
SubtestCommon item countRecommended timeWhat to practice
Basic Math Skills5550 minutesFractions, ratios, proportions, conversions, and checking the unit requested.
Reading Comprehension5560 minutesMain idea, evidence, inference, tone, and conclusions supported by the passage.
Vocabulary and General Knowledge5550 minutesMeaning in context, precise usage, and familiar words with specialized meanings.
Grammar5550 minutesSentence structure, agreement, punctuation, pronouns, and modifiers.
Anatomy & Physiology3025 minutesBody systems, structure–function relationships, and physiological mechanisms.
Biology, if required3025 minutesCells, genetics, biological processes, and interpreting relationships.
Chemistry, if required3025 minutesAtomic structure, bonding, reactions, solutions, and basic chemical reasoning.

These are common module counts and recommended timing, not a guaranteed local test schedule. Southern Arkansas University’s published A2 information, for example, describes 50 scored plus five pilot items in 55-question modules and 25 scored plus five pilot items in 30-question science modules. Check how your own school administers and scores its assessment.

02 / Read the whole admissions rule

Why a good overall score may not satisfy every requirement.

HESI A2 results use percentage scores, and programs determine how to use them. A school may set minimum subject scores, a composite requirement, ranking criteria, or a combination. There is no single Elsevier admission cutoff that guarantees acceptance at every nursing program.

Create a small requirements sheet with one row per required module: school minimum, your recent fresh-question accuracy, the concepts you miss, and your next review action. Avoid treating one strong subject as a reason to stop working on another required subject.

For a short section, a few errors can materially change the percentage. If a section contains 25 equally weighted scored questions, each one represents four percentage points - an arithmetic illustration, not a promise that every HESI administration uses identical scoring. Use the idea to motivate careful review rather than to calculate an unofficial result.

03 / Study with a purpose

Build a plan around the subject you need to improve next.

  1. Verify before you begin.

Find your school’s current testing page or ask admissions for the required modules, minimums, composite calculation, time allowance, retake limits, score validity period, and deadline. Save the source and check date.

  2. Take a baseline, then separate the gaps.

A low math score can come from fractions, proportions, unit conversions, or rushed reading. A low A&P score can reflect weak recall or weak understanding of a mechanism. Name the specific problem before choosing the review material.

  3. Use active recall with explanations.

Solve a problem before opening the answer. Explain why the method works and check why the other options fail. For vocabulary, use the term in a sentence; for A&P, trace a structure–function relationship rather than memorizing a disconnected label.

  4. Return to weak concepts after a delay.

Use Next Best Action and due flashcards to revisit missed material. Then answer fresh questions on the same concept. If performance improves only on repeated questions, continue reviewing rather than assuming the weakness is resolved.

  5. Rehearse your required combination.

AceItPrep’s default HESI practice configuration is independent of your school’s administration. Choose relevant subjects and verify pacing against your own instructions; do not assume that one fixed-length simulator matches every program.

There is no reliable promise that one week of conversions or vocabulary raises every student’s score by a fixed number of points. A useful plan measures what you can explain and apply, then adjusts the next practice session accordingly.

04 / Connect concepts to methods

A&P and math: build reasoning you can reuse.

Two productive review methods
SubjectPractice approachCheck your understanding
Anatomy & PhysiologyChoose a body system. Link the structure, its function, a control mechanism, and the effect of a change. Can you explain the mechanism without reciting a saved answer?
MathWrite the known quantities and units, select the relationship, solve, and check whether the magnitude makes sense.Did you answer in the requested unit and use a method you can reproduce?
Reading and languageUse passage evidence and sentence structure rather than a first impression. Can you point to the words or grammar rule that justify your choice?

For conversions, keep the units visible through the calculation. For ratios, state what each part represents before solving. For A&P, connect systems: a hormone, an organ, and a feedback response belong in one explanation rather than three unrelated flashcards.

Use vocabulary in context. Words such as “patent,” “insidious,” or “labile” can have specific meanings in a clinical sentence, but knowing one definition does not replace reading the passage. For grammar, identify the subject, verb, and modifier relationships before choosing the sentence that merely sounds familiar.

05 / Keep the goal specific

Turn your school’s requirements into a weekly routine.

  • Day one: write the required modules and score rules, then complete a baseline. Treat a short sample as a starting point, not a full diagnostic of every subject.
  • Middle sessions: combine one weak concept with one maintenance subject. Finish by explaining a missed answer and setting a short delayed review.
  • Weekly check: use fresh questions to see whether the same mistake returns. If it does, change the review method instead of only increasing the question count.
  • Before testing: confirm the appointment, identification, calculator rules, score reporting, and your school’s submission deadline. Keep a copy of the admission policy that applies to you.

A completed HESI requirement is one part of an application. Meeting a cutoff does not guarantee admission; programs may also consider grades, prerequisites, ranking rules, and other criteria. Prepare carefully while keeping the rest of your application on schedule.

Your practical questions

HESI A2 preparation, explained.

Which HESI A2 modules do I need to take?

Your nursing program selects the required modules. Elsevier’s current sixth-edition review covers Math, Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar, Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology, but your school may require only a subset.

What is the HESI A2 passing score?

There is no universal admission passing score. Programs set their own subject, composite, and ranking requirements. Verify the current policy for your school and application cycle.

How long is the HESI A2 exam?

Total time depends on the modules and your program’s administration. Common recommended times are 50 minutes for Math, Vocabulary, and Grammar, 60 for Reading, and 25 for each science subtest. Follow your school’s instructions rather than assuming one total duration.

Prepare for every subject your program actually requires.
